Today we finished our Geologic Time Scale notes linked below.
Geologic Time Scale Notes We also put the following vocabulary chart in our notebooks and filled it in. We will have a quiz on this vocabulary next Thursday the 21st. Vocabulary chart Don't forget that Friday is a noon dismissal day! Today we took notes on the geologic time scale. We focused on the eras and periods of geologic and biologic history of the Earth.
Notes No HW! Today we did Sci Fi Friday (since 8th graders will not have science on Friday). We read the striking story "If You Were a Dinosaur, My Love" by Rachel Swirsky (linked below) and connected the story to the structure of the childrens book "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie."
Link to the Story Assignment: In your science notebook, write your own version of this style of story. It must include 12 "If..." statements and make it begin and end with the same thought. The story can be on any topic you want! Have fun writing it. Today we began our study on the geologic and biologic history of Earth. Students tried predicting where on different scale models important events in the history of the planet, like the first dinosaurs or birds evolved, and were surprised by just how relatively recent multicellular life is.

For Sci Fi Friday, we read the classic tale "The Monkey's Paw" that illustrates all too well the old adage "be careful what you wish for." For homework, students need to pick something they might wish for and describe a potentially good outcome and an unintended or surprising outcome of such a wish and then add an illustration. This should be in their science notebooks and is due Monday.

The students did an excellent job overall, and most groups landed their eggs successfully. Below is a link to a spreadsheet with the results. Congratulations to 4th period for having the best overall average score!

Today we read the story "Civilization" by Vylar Kaftan, a short story in the style of Choose Your Own Adventure books!
