8th Grade Science
Today, students continued their work on their egg drop engineering design challenge. Many moved from the planning stage to the construction of prototypes.
Homework: None unless students want to continue their project work at home or do more research.

Today we began our Engineering Design Challenge for an egg drop. Students are challenged with designing a vessel to safely land an egg from a drop of 433 centimeters (around 13 feet).
Teams were randomly selected, and students began their research and brainstorming of solutions. We watched the video below for ideas as well: Egg Drop Video The vessels will be scored based on the following parameters. The lowest score wins. 1. Budget for materials multiplied by 10 added to the mass in grams and the volume in centimeters squared. If the egg is intact, the score is subtracted by 3,000. If the egg is cracked but not leaking, the score is subtracted by 1,000. The handout below has the budgeting amount. Design sheet Students will be assessed on their use of the Engineering Design Process as well as the Habits of Scholars responsibility, craftsmanship, and self regulation. I will post the rubric soon. The egg drop will be some time next week. We will decide on the date for this for by the end of class on Thursday. Should be great fun! Hello All!
Today we learned how to use plickers, an interactive tool for answering questions in class. No HW. Today was our first SciFi Friday! TO kick things off, we read the story "Zero Hour" by Ray Bradbury. The story is linked below. We then watched an episode of The Ray Bradbury Theater linked as well.
"Zero Hour" Story "Zero Hour" TV Show HOMEWORK (Due Monday 8/28): Write one paragraph (at least 6 sentences) comparing the TV episode and the written story. Which do you prefer and why? Give at least 2 specific examples. Today students continued setting up their notebooks for science. We also took notes on the Engineering Design Process, the steps we will use to solve problems throughout the year in science class. The slideshow below has the notes we took.
Slideshow We also applied the steps to and episode of Mythbusters that can be watched here: Mythbusters episode Homework Due Monday August 28th In your science notebook, create an "About Me " page on the first page of your science notebook. It must include the following: -Name -Birthday -3-5 Fun Facts about you -3 images (you can draw or print and add) -Colorful -Neatly done This page will be assessed on completeness and craftsmanship! Today we kicked off science for the school year! Students filled out a personal survey for me, and we began setting up our science notebooks. Tomorrow we will begin our first full-on science lesson.
