7th Grade Science
Today we built models of DNA out of toothpicks, twizzlers, and marshmallows. The model we made represents 8 parts of the 6 billion parts of DNA in one human cell. We then did some other calculations. If we wanted to build a twizzler model of all of the DNA in one human cell, it would be 95,000 miles long! We would need 1.5 billion twizzlers, 12 billion marshmallows, and 6 billion toothpicks. The cost for the materials would be around $145 million. Crazy!
No homework in science today.

Students continue to prepare for their big debates on Thursday and Friday. They will have tomorrow and Wednesday in class to get ready as well.
HOMEWORK: Prepare for debates that will happen Thursday and Friday. For Sci Fi Friday, we watched the following bittersweet short film about cloning and the future:
World of Tomorrow This is the link to the preview. You can watch the entire movie on Netflix. Students were phenomenal on our field trip to Asheville High to learn about debate. Homework: Finish reading The House of the Scorpion by Monday! Debates will be next Wed and Thurs Students spent time learning about CRISPR technology that is allowing for dna manipulation at a very low cost. This technology could be a gateway to all kinds of genetic manipulation. Here is a link to the video we watched:
Sci Show CRISPR Students also learned their resolutions for their debate topics. Here is a link to that document: Debate Resolutions I can order a classroom kit for us to try CRISPR technology at school. The kit itself costs $500. Anyone willing to make a donation towards the cost of this to let students try this out in the classroom? Email me if interested or want to know more details! :-) |
