Students watched the following episode of Nova on getting a genetics test. It is fascinating stuff!
Cracking the Genetic Code Homework: Students, in their science notebook, need to write a one paragraph summary of whether or not they would want to have a genetics test. This paragraph should be written on the page to the left of their notes on the movie.

They also watched the following documentary about cloning: National Geographic's The Cloning Age Have a great weekend! Students continued to make alien babies today! They really seem to be enjoying the project.
HOMEWORK: Catch up on reading The House of the Scorpion by tomorrow. There will be a reading quiz! Today we began a fun project in which students are creating Punnett Squares for an alien family. Alien Genetics Family Photo Album HOMEWORK: Do not forget to keep reading The House of the Scorpion. Our next discussion day will be this Friday. Students did an excellent job kicking off their discussion on The House of the Scorpion. Keep up with the reading.
Tomorrow we will do a Breakout Box centered around music theory. Under the direction of senior Riley Stephens, students worked in small groups to build instruments out of everyday materials. Some groups built a calimba while others worked on a rattle drum.
Here is a link to instructions for making these instruments and others: http://www.howweelearn.com/spectacular-homemade-musical-instruments/ Today we began a mini unit and physics and sound. Senior Riley Stephenson is teaching for the next 3 classes about how to build music instruments, how music and waves work, etc.
For his senior project, Riley built a beautiful marimba from scratch. Students learned this process and got an impromptu concert as well. HOMEWORK: Read The House of the Scorpion p.102 by Monday. Today we kicked off The House of the Scorpion! Students received their book today and we previewed its place in what we are studying.
