7th Grade Science
Happy Halloween!
Today, students assembled their checkbooks for our new behavior plan. Here is a summary of the plan: Students earn $20 a day for each day they are at school. They also earn extra money when hired by teachers for extra jobs and when earning a green card. Students will need to write a check in order to leave the room and buy supplies. They will also incur fees for yellow and red cards, leaving a mess in class, etc. Each Monday, students receive a deposit of money earned in the previous week minus any fines. They are expected to keep up with their checkbook register for all checks written as well. Once a month, we will conduct a checkbook balance. If students are close or spot on in their checkbook upkeep, they will receive a bonus. This process should help students take more responsibility for supplies and behavior and help them learn how to keep up with a checkbook!

For Sci Fi Friday, we read Rold Dahl's classic story "The Man from the South." Below is a link to the story and to the Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode based on the story.
Story: https://maggiemcneill.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/man-from-the-south.pdf Movie:http://vidzi.tv/6w2dcayw3o2j.html#close HOMEWORK: Create a list of 5 reasons or things you prefer about the written story or the movie. Today we began our unit on genetics, a fascinating area of study. Students took inventories of their traits to see what is inherited in dominant and recessive ways. Feel free to discuss a widow's peak, left or right handedness, cleft chins, etc.
HOMEWORK: None! Students worked on portfolio reflections about their roller coaster projects today, providing advice for the teachers on how to improve the learning process.
Students also learned about a new classroom economy system for tracking behavior individually. Embedded in this system is a chance for students to learn how to keep up with and balance a checkbook! Students did a phenomenal job presenting their roller coasters and presenting a sales pitch as to why their roller coaster design should be purchased for a new theme park.
The craftsmanship and collaboration was apparent in each and every design. Excellent work! HOMEWORK: None! :-) Students are finishing up their models and will make their pitches to Heather and Jason tomorrow. The pitches must include:
Content: · Name of Coaster · Theming/Decoration · Budget · Fun/Thrill Elements · Why You Made Choices You Did · Why We Should Buy Your Coaster · Struggles with the process and how your group overcame them · Demo of Model Presentation: · Less than 5 minutes · Everyone must speak · Can use visuals or slideshow but not required · Submit your final budget/design Here is a link to Shark Tank pitches for inspiration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VroUci_e-c Today, students read the fun and dark story "The Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl. Here is a link to the story:
http://www.depa.univ-paris8.fr/IMG/pdf/lamb_to_the_slaughter_by_roald_dahl-2.pdf For homework, due Monday the 24th, students need to write a short newspaper article as if they were at the scene of the crime with the investigators. PARTS OF NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: - Headline - Facts only. No opinions. - No flowery or descriptive language - Brief and to the point - What you see at the scene and gather from interviews - Can give quotes to characters that seem reasonable Have a great weekend! |
