7th Grade Science
I apologize for not updating in a week. Last week was a bit hectic.
Today, students filled out a quick reflection on the trip to Dollywood. If you were absent today, please see Jason for one to do. It is also linked below. Dollywood Reflection Students also received a grade sheet updating where they are at in their science grades to help them prepare for student-led conferences. HW: None!

Today, we dug deep into the story "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury (linked below). The tale is a cautionary story of what happens if we become too dependent on technology. We also watched the episodic version of it from the series The Ray Bradbury Theater that can be viewed for free on Amazon for Amazon Prime Members.
"The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury Homework: Finish roller coaster research by Monday! Today we continued our roller coaster research. Please see yesterday's entry for the specifics.
HW: Roller Coaster presentations will begin Monday! Today students received research sheets to place in their science notebooks and begin researching a roller coaster of their choice. The handout is below:
Roller Coaster Research Sheet Presentations on the coasters are due Monday. Today we continued our study of the parts and elements of roller coasters. We took notes based on the slides below.
Elements of Roller Coasters Slideshow No HW for tonight! If you missed class today, please copy the notes you missed from a classmate. :-) Today we finished our study of Ray Bradbury's "All Summer in a Day" and then began studying the elements go into the design of a roller coaster. We will continue those notes this week!
Stay safe and dry. Today for Sci Fi Friday, we read the story "All Summer in a Day," a powerful narrative that touches upon issues of bullying and regret. The story is linked below. We also watched a televised adaptation (or at least began one) that we will finish on Monday. It, too, is linked below. Happy Weekend! No Homework!

The students did an excellent job overall, and most groups landed their eggs successfully. Below is a link to a spreadsheet with the results. Congratulations to 4th period for having the best overall average score!
The final egg drop will be this Thursday! Students spent today working on their egg drop or completing their SciFi Friday HW. I have moved the due date for this to Thursday as well.
Today we read the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. This chilling story has much to say about blindly following tradition and was a major inspiration for Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games.
Homework Due Wednesday September 6th: In your science notebook, write a 5 sentence paragraph describing your thoughts on one of the following aspects of the story: 1. Imagery: What specific imagery helps contribute to the meaning of the story? 2. How does Jackson demonstrate one of the following themes: traditions, following others blindly, population control? 3. The importance of foreshadowing in the story. Make sure to have 3 clear examples of support from the story in your paragraph. |
